John L. Barnes
has been named Executive Director of the Funders Concerned About AIDS (FCAA), a funders’
affinity group responsible for mobilizing and tracking the U.S.
philanthropic response to HIV/AIDS. Barnes has served as FCAA’s Interim
Executive Director since March, during which time he orchestrated the
organization’s inaugural annual gathering, finalized a new three-year
strategic plan, and led efforts to streamline FCAA’s operation.
“John has been deeply involved in direct service and philanthropy
focused on social justice issues and people living with HIV/AIDS and
other critical illnesses,” said LaTida Smith, Chair, FCAA Board of
Directors. “The Board feels that his passion and leadership as both a
grantmaker and grantseeker will challenge and invigorate FCAA and our
efforts to mobilize AIDS Philanthropy.”
Barnes joins FCAA with more than 20 years of leadership in the private,
nonprofit and government sectors. Most recently he served as Deputy
Executive Director for Program and Development of Food and Friends, Inc.
in Washington, DC. His professional experience includes managing the
Hunger and Domestic Violence portfolios of the Altria Group, serving as
executive director of AIDS Nutrition Services Alliance, Metropolitan
AIDS Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance, and Delaware Lesbian and Gay
Health Advocates (AIDS Delaware). Barnes served on the Board of
Directors of FCAA from 2005-2009.
